Abstract
23,511. Penn, B. H. Oct. 14. Clutches, friction.-Relates to friction clutches of the type in which balls or rollers are wedged between inclined parts, ordinary friction clutches being in some cases used in combination in order to give a gradual take-up of the drive. Fig. III shows a construction in which a cone friction clutch is used in combination. A cone F<3> on the shaft S<3> is moved into engagement with a cone C<3> sliding in slots in the gear-wheel P<3>. The cone C<3> has an inclined surface M<3>, which, on further movement of the operating-lever, depresses balls G<3>, and presses pivoted pawls D<3>, carried by a part R<3> secured to the pulley, into the path of rollers A<3> bearing on a cylindrical bush B<3> secured to the shaft S<3>. Fig. II shows a similar arrangement of balls G, pivoted pawls D and balls A<1>. End pressure on the operating-lever is relieved by flat portions of the cone C<3> engaging the balls G<3>, and by pivoted hooks V<3> engaging catches X<3> and disengaged by cam-surfaces Y<3> on return of the operating-lever. The surfaces M<3> may act directly on the pawls D<3>, which may be shaped as shown in Figs. V, VI, and VII. The part C<3> may ba acted on direcbly by the operating-lever.
