Abstract

20,496. Jelley, J. Sept. 23. Clutches ; motor cycles.-A friction clutch for motor cycles &c., operates both by the engagament of conical surfaces and the contraction of a split ring. The drum A has slot A<1> sliding on the feather B' on the extension B fixed to the shaft C. Within the drum is the split ring D, on the outside of which are one or more projections with flat or curved inclined surfaces, engaging corresponding recesses in the drum, or a single incline or a series of contiguous inclines may be employed. One end of the ring may be anchored to the drum. The pulley E is fixed to the flanged sleeve F mounted freely on the part B and bearing against the stop B<3>. The engaging surfaces of the drum A and ring D, or of the ring D and the flange F<1>, are coned, and between the conical surfaces a leather or other friction band G may be inserted. The plate H, secured to the drum, retains the ring D in position. The spring J holds the parts of the clutch in contact to convey the rotation of the shaft C to the pulley E, the inclined projections on the ring D causing the ring to contract on the flange F<1>. To disengage the clutch, the drum A is drawn back by the trunnion ring K, provided with the thrust bearing K<1>. The longitudinal motion of the drum may be effected by screws engaging eyes in a ring arranged around the boss of the drum, or by a screw thread arranged concentrically with the shaft. The clutch may be modified to make the ring D expand instead of contract, or to make the inner part movable instead of the outer part.
