Abstract

23,270. Mesinger, H. Oct. 12. Aerial machines without aerostats; cars.-An aerial machine comprises a body portion 15, preferably of semi - elliptic shape in longitudinal section, a plane 53, and pairs of vibrating wings 25 adjustable bodily about a longitudinal shaft to which they are connected. Planes, arrangement and construction of.-The fixed plane 53 is carried by posts 54, and comprises a longitudinal bar 55, Fig. 9, two cross-bars 56, and wires 57 connected to adjustable hooks 58. The plane is preferably curved downwards near its rear end to direct the air towards the rear propeller. The wings comprise U-shaped frames 25, braced by wires and arranged upon a shaft 20 with a slight rearward dip, series of slats 30 being pivoted to cross-bars 28, 29 secured to the frames. The slats 30 are knuckle-jointed, so that their downward movement is limited. Propelling.-The rear propeller 36 may be driven alone or together with the front propeller 49 and the wings, these wings being operated by means of cranks formed on the shaft 44 of the front propeller. For this purpose, the motor 33, Fig. 3, may be coupled to the shaft 35 of the rear propeller 36 by means of a clutch 34 operated from a lever 39, and a pinion 42 on the shaft 35 may be put into gear with a wheel 43 on the shaft 44 by means of a lever 45. Each pair of wings is connected by rods 52, Fig. 1, to corresponding pairs of cranks 50 formed at intervals on the shaft 44, the members of each pair of cranks being set at rightangles to each other. Steering.-The pairs of wings may be tilted about a shaft 18 by a hand-lever 21, the shaft 20 being connected to the shaft 18 by arms 19. The wings may be locked in the adjusted position by the engagement of a spring latch provided on the hand-lever with a toothed sector.
