Catch gear of mine-cage type.-Comprises a pair of catch - arms connected to a weighted block, which is normally supported by a detent but is released by a second block falling on the detent arm when the hoisting-cable is broken. The catch-arms 23 are guided in holes in a fixed plate 24 and are pivoted at their upper ends to a block 20 sliding in a vertical casing 13. A detent 30 with extension arm 31 locks the block in position. The block is slotted to receive a roller connected by side links to an upper block 18 to which the hoisting-cable is attached. In the event of the cable breaking, the upper block, assisted by springs, falls and engages the arm 31 so as to release the detent 30, thereby allowing the lower block 20 to fall, and spreading the catch-arms into engagement with the guides. A link 33 connected to the arm 31 releases a pawl 29, which retains the mechanism in operative position by engaging ratchet teeth on the side of the block 20.
