Abstract
21,546. Snee, W. Sept. 21. Screw motors.- A water - current or wind motor comprises a vane wheel, Fig. 2, of which the vanes 11 are dished and bent over towards the direction from which the current comes. The vanes are twisted to form screw surfaces, and are made concave towards the current so as to cause the fluid impinging on the wheel vanes near the centre to flow along the vanes towards their tips, and the fluid impinging on the vanes near the tips to flow towards the centre. The vanes are shaped so that these contrary currents meet as shown in Fig. 12, and the fluid is discharged to the rear near to the part of the vanes marked C<1>. The wheel may be cut out of one piece of sheet metal. Various modifications are shown. In one, the vanes are arranged tangentially to the hub 1. In another, the vanes do not reach to the hub, and are mounted on a skeleton frame. A second wheel may be mounted to catch the fluid passing through the centre of the annular wheel. The tips of the vanes are made to overlap the rear edges of the adjacent vanes. The vanes may be bent rearwards before being bent over towards the current.
