Abstract

Multiplying and dividing apparatus of the type described in Specification 13,700/90, is provided with means for unlocking the sliding carriage, by which multiplication or division by multiples of ten is effected, and for moving it one step only to the right or left by a single operation of a lever. Means are also provided which allow an indefinite movement to the right or left to be given to the carriage when desired. In the sectional plan shown, a pair of levers h, i is mounted on the sliding carriage ; and either of them, when rocked towards the other, is adapted to raise a latch r from one of a number of slots a in the fixed bed-plate of the apparatus. Further pressure, for instance upon the lever h, then moves the carriage in the direction shown by the arrow ; and the withdrawal of the projection q from the end o of a spring-controlled pawl k causes the pawl to be rocked so that its inner end comes between two adjacent studs v, a number of which are mounted upon the bed-plate. The extent of movement of the carriage is partly limited by the amount of relative movement which can take place between the pawl and its pivot d owing to the slot g in the pawl. When the lever h is released, the latch r engages in the next slot to the right in the bed-plate, and the pawl is restored to its original position by the lever and its spring. To enable the carriage to be moved any number of steps to the right or left when both levers are operated simultaneously, the levers are provided with rods 2, 1 respectively, which, when either lever is operated, prevent the pawl of the other lever from being rocked ; thus, when both levers are operated, the pawls k, l are rendered inoperative. In a modification, the two levers h, i mty be operated by means of a single handle.
