Abstract
20,730. Walker, A. C. Sept. 10. Levers, locking. -In a lever and quadrant control device for the change-speed gear of motor-vehicles &c., and for electric switches or other purposes, means are provided to ensure an automatic step-bystep movement of the lever, s u c h means being put out of action when desired. A detent rod B, slidingly mounted on the e control lever A, is normally pressed by a spring (not shown), into engagement w i t h notches D in the quadrant E, which passes through a slot in the lever A. The lever also carries, on studs G', a pair of slotted side plates G joined by a transverse bar or roller F, which is adapted to engage rectangular teeth 0 on the under surface of the quadrant. A link H, pivoted at J, joins this member to the detent rod B, being connected to the rod B by a pin and slot K, L and a spring M. When the detent B is fully withdrawn by grasping the handle and the pivoted part C, the pawl or catch F is also drawn up and engages the surface of the tooth 0. When the lever is then moved along the quadrant, the catch F engages between the teeth 0 and prevents further movement until the detent has been dropped into the next notch D. When it is desired to keep the member F out of action, a sliding part S in the handle of the lever A, normally pressed outwards by a spring T, is depressed, so that a lug R thereon engages a projection on the pivoted part C, allowing this member to be operated sufficiently to withdraw the detent. B, but not to advance the pawl F into the spaces between the teeth O.
