Abstract

20,380. Farag¾, A. Sept. 6. Diffusion apparatus for liquids. - Solutions are concentrated by osmosis, without heating, by passing the liquid to be concentrated through a tubular system of semi-permeable material, around which a concentrated solution of a salt flows in a reverse direction. This solution is conveniently contained in an outer tubular system. Sugar solutions may be concentrated by this process, and it is suitable for solutions of explosive substances. The tubular system may consist of clay pipes, the pores of which have been filled with a precipitate, such as copper ferrocyanide. The diluted salt solution is regenerated chemically, for example, in the case of calcium chloride by rendering alkaline and precipitating calcium carbonate, which is dissolved in hydrochloric acid.
