Abstract
20,258. Woodward, F., and Shaw, F. Sept. 4. [Cognate Application, 28,119/09.] Straight-bar machines.-Rib machines of the Cotton's type are provided with improved and simplified means for producing tuck stitches and holes for marking and indicating purposes, in predetermined positions and order by means of suitably - spaced points 3. To produce drop stitches, the points 3 are caused to close the beards, as shown in Fig. 2, as the needles descend, the new loop being thus knocked over with the old loop. To produce tuck stitches, the points are caused to hold the needles away from the presser without closing the beards, as shown in Fig. 3, thus allowing the old loop to pass to the heads of the needles. The movements required for these purposes are obtained by cam mechanism. The predetermined traversing movement required is obtained from a pawl 12 acting on a rack 11 and traversing a stopplate against which the points rod abuts. This pawl traverses the maximum distance it is required to move the points, but the acting end is normally held out of engagement with the rack 11 by a pin 14 resting on a shoulder 15 of a finger 16. When it is desired to traverse the points rod, a pattern-wheel is caused to place one of a number of jacks 20 into the path of the end 19 of the finger and arrest its movement to the right under the action of the spring 18. The pin 14 then runs off the inclined shoulder 15, and the pawl 12 drops into the rack 11. At the same time, a pin extending across the jacks 20 is displaced and brings into action the apparatus for operating the points.
