Abstract

19,800. Yorke, W. Aug. 30. Drawings to Specification. Liquid-meters.-A weir notch is constructed so that the rate of discharge is proportional to the ' head,' the width of the weir at any height being inversely proportional to the square root of the head, and the cross-sectional area of liquid flowing over the weir being directly proportional to the square root of the head. Since the coefficient of discharge varies slightly with the shape of the issuing jet, the shape of the weir is slightly modified from that obtained by the above proportions. The weir may be symmetrical about a vertical axis or one side may be vertical, or of any convenient outline, the other side being determined by setting off the proper widths. The weir may also be formed from two plates, so fastened that they are capable of relative adjustment. If the weir be formed in the side of a tank, a float in the tank records on a rotating drum actual rates of discharge.
