Abstract

19,704. Blake, E. W. Aug. 27. G r a v i t y-f e e d lubricators; forcefeed lubricators.- A lubricator for supplying oil to the cylinders of engines, exhausters, &c. is operated by variations of pressure on the two sides of the piston. An oil-reservoir a, Fig. 1, has an outlet q communicating with an orifice in the wall of the cylinder to be lubricated. When the orifice is uncovered on the pressure side of the piston, a cone valve h<1> closes and a similar valve on the same stem b opens, admitting a charge of oil to a chamber b. On the exhaust stroke of the piston, the valve h<1> opens and the charge of oil is sucked into the cylinder. To prevent the vacuum in the engine from being destroyed in the event of the lubricant being exhausted, a liquid seal is provided comprising a tube j surrounded by a thimble l attached to the stem i. The thimble may be weighted or spring-pressed to force the charges of lubricant into the steam area. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the lower valve consists of a piston m, which, when raised, forces the oil from the chamber b into a side chamber q, at the same time uncovering a port o through which the oil passes to the outlet g. A pipe r is provided to exhaust the stem used on the pressure stroke.
