Aerostats are made to retain their shape by stiffening the envelope by means of longitudinallyextending chambers filled with air or gas under pressure. In one form, Fig. 2, the chambers are formed by radial partitions c, not necessarily gas-tight, between an inner covering b and an outer covering a. In a modification, Fig. 8, separate gas-tight cells i are placed in the chambers. In another modification, Fig. 4, the chambers comprise longitudinal tubes d held apart by stays e and diagonal rods f, Fig. 5. Balancing.-The cells i, Fig. 8, may be divided along their length, and the position of the centre of gravity of the aerostat may be varied by filling the cells with air or gas at different pressure.
