Type ; inking -apparatus; printing - surfaces ; printing in several colours.-For printing in varying intensity of colour in imitation of half-tone printing, a transfer or collecting plate formed of or cast from special type having dots of suitable size and shape is used. It is inked by several surfaces of roller or other plastic composition cast with prominent portions of the correct contour, and with a strengthening-layer of wire-gauze. Preferably each composition surface L is mounted on a roller, with the printing-portions corresponding to one colour projecting beyond the wiregauze. The light and shade in all the colours, which are printed successively on to the collecting- plate, is obtained by using types Z having printing- faces of varying size, and any suitable shape, as shown. This surface, or a plate cast therefrom, is mounted on a cylinder, and prints. the colours on to the paper preferably after the black portions have been printed. The transfer surface may be first set up with type of medium size, and portions of the surface changed for types having larger or smaller heads, as required.
