Abstract
18,203. Bender, O. Aug. 6. Nitrogen oxides ; sulphuric acid. - In a process for the production of nitrogen oxides by the combustion of fuel producing considerable quantities of water on combustion, the fuel is converted into gas in a furnace, and the gas is burnt above the layer of fuel by supplying an excess of oxygen or a mixture of oxygen or nitrogen, the resulting gases, containing nitrogen oxides, being cooled to separate water by means arranged to prevent the condensed water from flowing back into the reaction chamber. The supply of oxygen &c. may consume a further part of the ungasified fuel, and it is convenient to supply an excess such that the reaction-gases contain from 10-20 per cent of oxygen in addition to from 20-40 per cent of carbonic acid. The heat of the gases may be utilized for steam-raising by first cooling to such an extent that no water is liberated. Any sulphur in the fuel is converted into sulphur trioxide, and finally into sulphuric acid, which can be separated.
