Abstract

18,004. Nichols, H. B. Aug. 21, 1908, [Convention date]. Railway rails, trueing and surfacing in situ.-A machine for grinding rails consists of a frame, mounted on wheels adapted to run on the rails, and carrying a motor which reciprocates a heavy mass carrying grinding-members in contact with the rail and guided in an extension of the machine frame. The machine frame is mounted symmetrically on wheels c', c'‹ running on the rail R to be ground, and is steadied by an outrigger wheel on the mate rail. The frame has bars c<11> by means of which it may be moved along or lifted off the rails, and band brakes operated by a lever E by means of which it may be retained stationary at any desired point. The band brakes act upon drums c<90> fixed at the outer ends of the axles of the truck, and are connected to a rod e<8> pivoted at e<7> so that when they are in operation there is little or no strain on the pivot ; the handle E has a ratchet attachment so that it may be locked in any position. The extension c of the frame carries an horizontal sliding frame g which is reciprocated by means of a rod D, a roller arm d<4>, and a cam m' rotated by an electric or other motor m. In the event of a reciprocating steam or other engine being used, the cam mechanism may be dispensed with. The frame g carries, in vertical guides g<5>, a heavy mass g' which holds abrading-blocks g<2> adjustable by means of screws g<6>. When the machine is not in use, the blocks may be lifted off the rails by means of a segment g<11> and a lever g<13>.
