Abstract

17,386. Roberts, D. July 26. Lever and tappet actuated pumps; buffers.- In a mechanism for transmitting reciprocating motion, for operating valves, pumps, &c. in which slack or lost motion occurs in normal working, the slack is taken up, and concussion in the rapidly moving parts is prevented, by a system of springs and levers or their equivalents. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a is an operating-cam, b the pump-plunger striker, and d the spring which keeps it up to the cam a. The pump plunger e is connected to the striker b by the links m, j, which are connected at l to a spring device q which absorbs the slack or lost motion. In another form, Fig. 4, the end of the pump striker b is flat, and the pump plunger e has a double inclined surface t on which rest two rollers u connected by toggle-links w under the action of springs. When the striker b descends, the movement of the rollers u along this surface t, and the consequent stretching of the springs, absorbs the slack or lost motion. The rollers may be replaced by two wedges acting upon a flat surface on the plunger. Fig. 8 shows an arrangement in which the toggle-links are dispensed with. A single roller connected to a fixed arm by a spring may be used.
