Controlling -apparatus, arrangements of hand and foot gear in conjunction with.-Relates to mechanism of the type described in Specifications 19,044/04, and 15,912/06, for applying brakes to the steering-wheels of motor-vehicles, and comprises a construction in which brakes are operated by mechanism having a combined rotary and axial movement relatively to the axes of the steering-pivots. Fig. 1 shows one construction of apparatus in which a cam-lever e fitting between the loose ends of the brake band is operated by rotating the lever d, and thus moving the cap a axially on a screw-thread of quick pitch formed on the steering-pivot. An adjusting-nut h is provided to compensate for wear. In a modified form, the screwed cap is connected to the lever e by a ball-and-socket joint. Fig. 4 shows a further modification in which a rod k passing through the steering- pivot is rotated by a lever o, and is thereby moved axially by coacting helical or oblique surfaces k<1>, against the action of a spring p, to operate the brake lever. The axial and rotary movements may be performed by separate coacting members. The mechanism also may be arranged so that the steering-pivot, the brake drum, and the brake-operating mechanism are in the hub of the wheel.
