Abstract
15,585. Austin Motor Co., and Austin, H. July 5. Turning.-Relates to the type of clamping-device for locking a turret or capstan or the swivel rest of a lathe in which a ring-like member is arranged between annular surfaces formed on the turret &c. and its support respectively, and adapted to be moved radially so as to force these surfaces apart by a wedging action, thereby clamping a shoulder of the turret &c. against a shoulder of the support, and consists in obtaining the clamping by contracting the ring-like member, and providing means for readily effecting this without the necessity of disconnecting or reconnecting the ends of the ring. In Figs. 1 and 2, which show one example of the application of the invention to the turret of a lathe, the plug B of the turret head A is formed with a reduced portion B<1>, on which is screwed a collar D having a bevelled shoulder d on its upper side. A clamping - ring E, formed with a corresponding bevel on its lower side, is arranged between the shoulder d and another shoulder c formed on the turret support C. By contracting the ring E radially, the turret head is secured in position. In the form shown, the ring E is formed in halves pivoted together at e and provided at their free ends with lugs d', d', which are normally forced apart by a spring e<1>, but may be pressed together by the rotation of a cam f<4> which engages a rod f<1> bearing against the lug d<3>, the other lug d' being arranged to abut against an adjuating-screw f. The cam f<4> may be rotated by means of a handle f<2>, or automatically from some operative part of the machine through the medium of a rack and a pinion f<5>. A ring c' may be secured to the turret support underneath the ring E, in order to exclude dust and retain lubricant and to prevent tilting of the turret when not clamped by the ring E. In a modification, the bearing-shoulder on the turret head or its support is formed with a curved instead of a straight bevel, and in this case the clamping- ring is made of circular or other curved crosssection. The clamping-ring may be modified by forming it as a complete ring split at one side ; or it may be composed of more than two portions hinged together. In another modification, the collar D, instead of being screwed on to the plug B, may be secured to the underside thereof, as shown in Fig. 6, by set-screws, and in such case the ring c<1> may be flanged or screwed to the underside of the support C in a similar manner. In another modification, the collar D may be formed integral with the plug B, in which case a groove is provided in the turret support C :of sufficient depth to allow the clamping-ring E to be expanded therein to allow the removal or insertion of the plug. In a further modification, the turret bead, instead of being formed with a flat shoulder resting on the support C, may be provided with a tapered plug fitting in a tapered hole in the support.
