Abstract
15,271. Johnson, T. June 30. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement and construction of; cars; steering.- The machine comprises lower, or both upper and lower, planes a, a', shaped as indicated by the outline 3, 5, 6, 4, 8 and pivotally mounted along the edge 5, 6. They are stayed by wires g secured to windlasses, by means of which their inclination can be adjusted to secure stability. Small planes d, d<1> are pivoted at the edge 3, 8 of the planes a, a<1>, and are adjustable in a similar manner to the planes a, a<1> by wires m. This arrangement of planes may be applied to toy machines. The pair of superposed tail planes n is both horizontally and vertically pivoted for steering and balancing. It is turned about the vertical pivot p automatically by the swinging frame q<1>, pivoted at q<3> and carrying the operator's seat q, while lever arms 10 on the frame q<1> enable the aviator to control its movement about the horizontal pivot 70. Propelling; shock of landing, deadening.-Propulsion is normally obtained by motor - driven proepllers s, s'. To ensure horizontal propulsion of the machine during descent, a forward propeller v is geared to horizontal propellers u adapted to be driven by the rush of air as the machine falls.
