Frame construction.-A ship or machine for travelling on land and water is constructed with a braced skeleton frame fitted with wheels or pontoons as required, and is propelled by means of a sail which may be supplemented or replaced by a motor coupled to the wheels or to a propeller. Two triangular frames a, b, of wood, steel, or aluminium, braced by transverse and diagonal bars, are connected together by struts and cross-stays c, and are pivoted at the apex to a fore-carriage consisting of upper and lower frames d<1> braced together and supported on two ball-bearing pneumatic tyred wheels, which are inclined as shown. Each frame d' consists of a transverse bar and two diagonal bars connected by cross-pieces. The rear of the frame is supported on two wheels e, which may also be mounted in a swivelling carriage. The fore-carriage is normally held in mid-position by springs, and is steered by cords &c. passed round guide-pulleys to a vertical steering-pillar at the rear; where a swiveling rear carriage is used, it is similarly connected to the steering- pillar.
