Plates, dishes, and the like, washing.-In a machine for washing plates, dishes, cups, &c., a skeleton carrier rotated in a washing-tank is provided on its periphery with holders, which automatically receive and grip the articles, carry them through the detergent liquid, and release them so that they slide into an adjacent rinsing - tank, whence they are carried to a receiving-band. The carrier is formed of two end frames 23, 24, which are loosely mounted on a shaft 5 and are connected together by means of flat gratings 28 each adapted to carry detachably a perforated plate-supporting board 29. To the gratings are pivoted perforated clamping-members 35 normally spring-pressed upon the boards 29 but lifted therefrom at the desired point by means of cam-actuated pivoted forks 41. An agitator 69, formed of end frames connected by obliquely-disposed slats 70, is fixed to the shaft 5 which is connected through spur gearing with the carrier, so that the agitator and carrier oppositely rotate at a fast and slow rate respectively. The action of the apparatus is as follows. The plates are fed from a table 13 through a flap-door 16, automatically opened by the engagement therewith of the end of the preceding board 29. Each plate slides down the fingers 20 of a hinged table 18, and, as an empty board 29 rises, fingers 32 thereon pass between the fingers 20 and lift the plate. The clamps 35 then descend and grip the plate during its passage through the liquid, and are raised again to release the plate when opposite the discharge opening 55. The plate thereupon slides into the rinsing-tank 55<a> and is conveyed through to the receiving-band by means of an endless carrier 62.
