Universal - feed sewing - machines; needles, vibrating. - In a universal - feed machine, the needle - bar is vibrated laterally in a constant direction, and automatic means are provided to vary the lateral throw of the needle as the direction of feed is changed. The length of the feed is varied also, being increased when the lateral throw is decreased, and vice versa. By these means, embroidery resembling hand - embroidery is produced, as shown in Fig. 3. In the construction shown, the needle-bar 13 is moved laterally by connexion with a quadrant 6, through a swing link 9. This link is raised or lowered to alter the lateral throw by a bar 33, which is actuated by a cam 26 rotated with the feed devices. The upper limit of the usual feed cone is varied correspondingly by means of a screw stop 28 on a lever 27, which is actuated by a second groove in the cam-barrel 26.
