Abstract

13,845. Nicolson, J. T. June 12. Water - tube boilers; partitions in water space ; steam receivers.-A steam-generator is built up of sections consisting of divided drums connected by small-bore water tubes, through which the water travels at a high speed in a circuitous course and in the opposite direction to the flow of furnace gases, as described in Specification 10,944/09. Three sections h, e, i, Figs. 1 and 2, are arranged in square formation around the furnace chamber, and a fourth section o is arranged at the hack of the furnace and a secondary-combustion chamber m. The lower tubes f of the section e are exposed to the direct heat of the furnace. The feed-water is fed to the lower drum d of the section i, and passes through the sections i, o, h forming the feedheating elements to the first compartment t of the section e forming the generating element. The furnace gases first come in contact with the tubes e of the generating element, they then flow at a high speed through the flues containing the feed-heating sections. The ratio of the heating-surfaces to the cross-sectional area of the flues has the high ratio set out in Specification 5140/07. The drums a, b are preferably fitted with float-controlled steam-escape valves, such as are described in Specification 10,944/09. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, the tubes f exposed to the direct heat of the furnaces are arranged at an angle on each side of the furnace, and are connected to an annular drum m<1> containing a secondary - combustion chamber m. The generating element e and the feed-heating elements h, i are arranged above the furnace chamber in the manner shown.
