Abstract

13,801. Cartland, G. H., and Esson, D. D. June 11. Bowling-machines.-In a throwing or bowling device, the bowling-arm D is attached to a toothed segment C, which is rigidly connected to a quadrant H<1> and pivoted on a pin C<1> in a fixed bracket B. The whole is supported on telescopic or other legs A. The bowling-arm D is pulled back against the resistance of an adjustable spring or springs G, into the position shown in Fig. 1, by means of a bent hand-lever K and pawl K<2> which engages the teeth of the segment C. A pawl b<1> on the bracket B retains the arm until the operator by returning the hand-lever K brings the rear of the pawl K<2> under a projection on the pawl b<1> and raises the same out of engagement with the teeth. The arm is arrested and the point of delivery of the ball determined by means of a pin M, which may be placed in any of the holes b<5> and is situated in the path of a spring stop on the toothed segment. In a modified arrangement, the shock of the bowling-arm is absorbed by the main spring G. The ball-holding cup E is provided with a tubular spindle mounted in a casing N and, during, and owing to, the forward swing of the arm D, the cup is rotated by means of a band O, O<1>, O<3> yieldingly attached to fixed arms on the bracket B. The same arms retain the ends of a band P, which similarly rotates a roller e<1> supporting the ball. The ball may thus be given a rotation about two axes at right-angles. The velocity of the ball may be regulated by means of a screw tightening-device J attached to the spring G. A velocimeter T on the arm D and a counter U operated by the pawl b<1> record the velocity of the ball and the number of balls delivered respectively. A suitable level V is fitted to the top of the apparatus. In a modification, the cords 0, P are dispensed with and the extremity of the spindle carrying the cup E is fitted with a fan which is rotated bv the movement of the arm through the air. The fan rotates the cup E and roller e<1> by means of gearing. The angle of the fan blades may be adjusted to alter the direction of rotation.
