Abstract

Gas, air, and steam meters.-The difference in pressure due to the difference in velocity at two different radii of a vortex formed in a fluid is used as a determinant of the quantity of fluid passing. Fig. 1 shows one form of apparatus constructed to measure the fluid accordingly. The vortex chamber A is of rectangular cross-section, and has its internal dimension in a radial direction greater than that in an axial direction. Passages B, C communicate with the vortex chamber and with indicating - apparatus for recording pressure. Coupling-pieces E, F, by which the device is connected to branches from the water or like mains, are attached to the ends of the chamber A. A cover G, Fig. 3, is placed over the chamber. In the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the vortex chamber is without inner walls, the vortex being formed by a block H. Fig. 7 shows another form in which the inlet F and outlet E are in line, and the block H is carried by a bar in a groove M, so that it may be moved into the position shown by dotted lines, in order to put the meter out of action.
