Flooring-blocks. - Cast-metal blocks for stair treads, and wearing-surfaces for floors, stairs, &c., are produced by applying a layer of closelyarranged hard granular mineral material, such as natural or artificial corundum or carborundum, to the mould surface before casting. In the mould for a stair tread shown in Fig. 1, the layer of granular material which may be from 1/32 to 1/4 of an inch in thickness is pressed into those parts of the mould surface corresponding to the upper surface and nosing by means of the pattern ; or the granular material may be held in place by means of a piece of wire-gauze which will melt and become incorporated with the base when the molten iron or other metal is introduced.
