Abstract

11,926. Newlands, B. E. R., and Parkinson, R. M. May 20. Electrolytes for chromic cells. A dry or solid preparation, which may be stored until required, is formed by mixing approximately 200 grms. of sodium bicromate, or an equivalent amount nf the potassium salt, with 125 c.c. of sulphuric acid; the solid is dissolved in water, mixed with a solution of about 20 grms. of chloride or other salt of sodium and diluted to one litre to give the electrolyte. Electrodes of zinc and carbon are preferably used; and the cell may be hermetically sealed, since no gas is evolved. According to the Provisional Specification, corresponding chromates may replace the bicromates, and the action may be prolonged by adding sodium sulphate or using more sodium chloride, or an electrolyte may be formed by dissolving the solid in water alone.
