Abstract

11,668. Puff, C. May 18. Projectiles ; projectile fuses.-Relates to combined shrapnel and common shell in which the filling is placed annularly around the axiallydisposed high-explosive charge, and the shrapnel charge is carried in the base. According to the present invention, the high-explosive chamber is rigidly connected to a fuse, so that its charge may be exploded after the expulsion of the shrapnel filling. In Fig. 1, the longitudinal high-explosive chamber b is shown as screwed into the body of the shell a from the rear. The time fuse j causes the explosion of the shrapnel charge d by means of the tube p, and is expelled from the shell with the filling f. The percussion or double fuse g remains ou the' chamber b, and subsequently causes the explosion of the common-shell charge d. In modifications, the central charge may be carried in several chambers, or the filling may be arranged centrally. The chamber d may also be enlarged in the rear to the full width of the body, the shrapnel charge being placed correspondingly forwards. The shrapnel charge may be composed of picric acid &c. in order that it may explode with the central charge when the whole projectile is used as a common shell ; and the filling may be partly embedded in such explosives. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the central charge is expelled with the filling, an additional high-explosive charge o<1> being provided in the base of the shell. A charge k is provided to shatter the time fuse in order that its setting may not betray the range to the enemy. The passage r is opened by the valve v when it is desired to explode the two forward charges simultaneously.
