Machines for making; inequalities, detecting and removing. - In machines for manufacturing or treating rubbered cord such as is used in the manufacture of cord tyres, apparatus is provided to keep an even tension on the cord. The strands B, Fig. 2, are drawn from supply bobbins A, which are mounted in pivoted frames A<1> and are provided with brake-disks A<4> which normally rest on stationary brake blocks A<5>. They are then passed over guide-pulleys C, which are carried on spring-controlled rods C<5> and are capable of swivelling to follow the line of travel of the cord as it leaves the supply bobbin. The strands then pass through a die D carried on a hinged horizontal arm D' which is connected to a clutch or striking gear so that if a knot or enlarged portion comes to the die it depresses the arm and stops the machine. The united strands are then passed round a positively-driven wheel E, Fig. 5, carried in a rotating frame F, and the resulting cord is wound upon a receiving- bobbin G by a traversing-device K. The bobbin G rotates in the same direction as the frame F and is mounted upon one member G<4> of a friction drive, the other member G<3> of which is positively driven through a bevel-gear G<1>. A casing L, which is connected to the drive member G<4> and to a pinion K" from which the traverse-device K is driven, surrounds the friction drive and is filled with lubricant. The drive is so arranged that when the bobbin is empty it is being dragged by the frame; then as the bobbin is filled, it increases in weight and the degree of slip is decreased, the tension which would tend to be decreased from this cause being kept practically uniform by the increased arm at which the force acts.
