Abstract

10,041. Inkpen, G. C. Vernon-. Oct. 27. Piles.-Reinforced-concrete piles, columns for telegraph wires, and similar structures are constructed with concrete spiral blades and with a helical reinforcement to resist torsion, so formed as to produce a helix of opposite sign to the helix of the sinking-screw. The helical reinforcement shown in Figs. 5 and 6 consists of a cylinder C, C' of expanded metal, perforated sheet steel, interlaced steel rods, or the like, strengthened by helically-wound rods d, d<1>, but the rods may be arranged vertically, and the expanded metal &c. helically as shown in Fig. 7. The screw, Figs. 5 and 6, is reinforced by radial metal brackets f, tangential brackets f<1>, and a ring g. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the concrete screw is encased in a metal mould e, provided with openings h for the liquid concrete. The width of the screw may be made variable, for example it may be larger at the top than at the bottom, and the pile may be made hollow with a circular cutting-edge. Key-ways or flat sides may be provided on the pile to engage with the screwing-in gear.
