Abstract
9256. Fairweather, W., [Underwood Typewriter Co.]. April 19. Platen rotation for condensed record work. Relates to apparatus of the kind described in Specification 15,441/08, in which the crank is directly connected with the platen and may be rotated through more than one revolution for the accommodation of bills having very deep printed headings. A wheel 10, having teeth corresponding in number to those of the line-spacing wheel, is secured upon a flattened hub 9 on the platen spindle 2 by means of a dowel device, and is rotated by a normally disengaged pawl 12 pivoted at 13 upon a crank 14. A pin 17 on the pawl normally occupies a recess 18 in the rim 19 of a disk 20, but, when the crank is moved forwards, the pin 17 is cammed to engage the pawl 12 with the wheel 10, the latch 22 of a rotary spring- controlled disk 23 mounted in the disk 20 being oscillated by the pin. The rim 19 maintains the pawl in engagement with the wheel 10. The rotation of the crank is limited by a stop-pin 38, which can be engaged with any one of the recesses 37 in the disk 20, and projects from a stem 44 carrying a finger-button 45 and arranged inside a tubular arm 40 loose upon the hub 9. A spring 47, Fig. 3, inside the arm 40 holds the pin 38 in engagement with the teeth 37. The stop-pin 38 does not project into the path of the crank 14 or the pawl 12, so that, during its first revolution, the crank passes freely by the stop. In the second revolution, however, an interponent 39, loose upon the hub 9 between the disk 20 and the wheel 10, is moved by the pin 17 and engages the stop-pin 38 to arrest the crank. A pivoted spring-controlled member 36, 50 is normally held as shown in Fig. 20, but is moved at the end of the first revolution of the crank by the pin 17 into the position shown in Fig. 1, so as to prevent the pin 17 from riding up above the latch 22 into the recess 18. During the backward rotation of the crank, the pin 17 moves the member 36, 50 back to its original position, so that, at the end of the crank movement, the pin 17 strikes the part 36, and, under the influence of the spring 34, moves up into the recess 18. This backward movement is longer than the forward movement of the crank by the length of the latch 22, and the entries on the record sheet are thereby spaced apart. When it is desired to use the apparatus for bills having short printed headings, the interponent 39 is thrown to its idle position, Fig. 20, and the finger-button 45 is pulled out and rotated so as bring into engagement with the teeth 37 a stop-pin 53 as shown in Fig. 20, which pin is longer than the stop-pin 38 and engages a shoulder 54 on the pawl 12 before the crank turns through a revolution from its initial position.
