Forcing liquid into gas. - Apparatus for oxidizing liquids by bringing them into intimate contact with gases comprises a tower containing packing-ma terial of very small size, for example small tubes or quartz sand, which is periodically flushed with the liquid, and having inlets and outlets for the gas so arranged that the path of the gas through the packing is short compared with the total height of the same. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the packing is arranged in a number of superposed layers 17 separated from each other by liquid seals, and the gas is supplied by the pipes 16 and taken off by the pipes 20. Liquid is forced to the top of the tower by a compressed-air pipe 11, and is siphoned over the packing as soon as the liquid seals the pipe 12<1>. In a modification, the liquid seals are dispensed with and the gas inlet and outlet pipes are arranged between alternate layers. In a further modification, the packing is arranged in a continuous layer between perforated tubes, and the gas passes from the inner tube horizontally through the packing.
