Abstract

8744. Allsop, T., and Sibson, W. W. April 13. Circulating or passing fluids through materials; rotary washing and like.-In a machine for dyeing and washing hosiery, yarns, &c., by circulating the treating - liquor through the goods contained in a perforated cage or otherwise supported, the circulating-means are contained in a relatively small chamber, within the treating-vat, which is closed at the top and bottom alternately by the operation of valves actuated at the proper periods by the driving- gear. In a modification, the cage takes the form of a cylinder, which is rotated simultaneously with, or independently of, the circulating-means. The removable cage 3, Figs. 1 and 2, constructed of angle-irons and wire fabric, or otherwise, may be subdivided by partitions 4 into compartments, for the simultaneous treatment of different articles. The dye liquor is drawn into the small chamber 10, containing the circulating-wheels 14, through openings 13 opposite the wheels, and is driven out at the bottom when the lower valve 12 is open, and so up through the material in the cage 3. The apper and lower valves 11, 12, being connected together by a rod 30, can only be open one at a time so that, when the circulation is reversed, the lower one 12 is closed and the upper 11 is opened. The periodic reversal of the circulation is effected by the suitable actuation of a cam shaft 34, driven through worm and bevel gear 49, 47, 46, 45 by the main shaft 26, which also drives the propellers 14 through bevel-gears 25, 24, 21, 20. The worm 49 is secured to' its shaft 26 by a clutch 50 which can be put in or out of action by a hand-lever 51. When the cam shaft 34 is driven, cams 35, attached thereto near its ends, rotate between rolls 41 attached to slotted links 39 connected to the upper valve 11. While the concentric faces 36, 37 of the cams are operating, the valves are held, one closed and the other open; when, however, the rolls 41 bear on the inclined faces 38, the valves alternately rise and fall, so reversing the flow. There is an opening 53 for introducing dye-liquor to, or removing it from, the vat 1, and also a steam-pipe 54 with branches 55. For treating hanks, a rack, Fig. 5, is used in place of the cage 3. The hanks are suspended from removable poles carried in. holes 61, and are limited in their upward movement, when the current is upwards, by an horizontal screw 60. In the modification, the forward end of the vat 101, Fig. 8, is preferably curved concentrically with the cylinder 103. The cylinder 103 runs on trunnions 105 in closed-in notches 106, and can be removed by hoisting standards 109 attached to the heads 104 of the cylinder. A hinged door 111, in the perforated perimeter of the cylinder permits access to its interior. The cylinder carries a gearwheel 115 attached to one of its heads 104, and is driven from the power-shaft 130 through suitable idler wheels 128, 116. The rotation of the propellers 140 or of the cylinder 103 can be stopped by disengaging a tubular shaft, running- on the power-shaft 130, by means of a handactuated clutch, or the idler wheel 116, by means of a hand-lever 125, respectively. The tubular shaft carries the bevel-wheels that drive the propellers 140, and also the worm, and corresponding clutch, for driving the cam-shaft 150. A deflector-plate 138 is arranged near the bottom of the vat 101 to guide the circulating liquor. This modification is especially applicable to softening stockings &c. after washing, the circulation of the liquid being stopped while the cylinder is rotated.
