Abstract
7826. Fairweather, W., [Underwood Typewriter Co.]. April 1. Tabulating - mechanism ; carriage - releasing arrangements.-Relates to tabulating-mechanism of the "column-jumper" class. Tabulating-keys are mounted on levers 13 connected to rods 16, each having a slot 17 engaged by the handle 18 of a column-stop 19 which is adapted to be swung forward to engage a stop 21 on the paper-carriage. The stops 19 are mounted on a rod 20 carried by a frame 26, which is pivoted at 29 and carries an arm 31 for lifting the feed-rack 34 to release the carriage. When a key is operated, the rod 16 is thrust upwards and tilts the selected stop 19 until its index-finger 41 engages a rack 27 on the frame 26 as shown in Fig. 7 Further movement of the key rocks the frame 26 on its pivots to release the carriage and moves the selected stop 19 into the path of the stop 21 as shown in Fig. 4. The slots 17 prevent the stops 19, other than the selected one, from being moved into the path of the stop 21 and also prevent the other tabulating-keys from being moved. The frame 26 is arrested by the rack 27 engaging a brake strip 42a. When the key is released, the frame 26 is restored by the weight of the feed-rack and a spring. The stop 19 is restored by means of a spring-pressed ball 45, which, during the movement of the stop is forced partly out of a groove 46 in the rod 20. When it is desired to use the device without jumping columns, the rod 20 is turned by a handle 49 so that all the stops 19 are turned until the fingers 41 engage the rack 27 and the handles 18 are at the top of the slots 17. A tabulating-key connected to a link 52 is then used in the ordinary manner. A detent 55 engaging recesses 56, 57 is employed to secure the rod 20 in either of its two positions. To permit adjustment of the stops, there is provided, between the rods 16 and the levers 13, a loose connexion consisting of a slotted part 23, which is pivoted to the lever 13 and is provided with a threaded stem 22 entering the rod 16. The connexions permit lateral play of the upper ends of the rods, so that the column-stops may be adjusted. This is effected by moving the frame 26 to bring the handles 18 to the top of the slots 17 and turning the rods 16 back on the pivots, the stops being then turned back to bring their teeth 42 out of the rack 27 and moved to the new position and again coupled to the rods 16. The rod 20 is provided with a groove 47, which receives the balls 45 when the stops are turned back for adjustment. Instead of a single stop 21 on the carriage, there may be a series of denomination stops.
