Crown corks and the like, applying.-In a machine for applying to bottles external metal caps provided with locking-flanges, compensating-means are provided to adapt the machine to apply caps properly to bottles varying somewhat in size. The reciprocating head 6 of the machine is made in two parts, the inner part 7, which carries the capsuling-head 11, moving freely in the outer part 8 and being capable of being locked to it at a certain point in its path, determined by the height of the bottle, so that the two parts move together through a constant and predetermined distance during the locking of the cap to the bottle. The part 7 is screw-threaded and is adapted to be connected to the part 8 by screw-threaded blocks 15 which are normally held out of engagement by springs 18. In operation, the head 6 descends until the capsuling-head 11 rests on the bottle, whereupon the downward movement of the part 7 is arrested. The part 8 continues to descend until lugs 17 on the blocks 15 strike the edges of the opening in the bracket 9, the blocks being forced inwards against the action of the springs 18 to lock the parts 7, 8 together. The final movement of the parts 7, 8 then takes place to force the cap into locking-engagement with the bottle. Hard steel tongues 20 are provided, against which the lugs impinge in passing through the bracket.
