Abstract

6011. Engel, E., and Yetton, J. March 12. Roundabouts.-Relates to amusement railways in which one or more submarine vessels travel on a track, part of which is submerged so that the vessels are successively submerged and brought to the surface. In the railway described, four cars are used, and the track is circular and has four depressions filled with water. Each car C is permanently secured to the driving-chain D, which is guided by rollers D<1>, D <3>. The rails have lateral channels in which the wheels of the vessels run. The chain is driven by sprocket-wheels F which are connected by pawl - and - ratchet gears with the engine. This allows the vessels when descending the gradients to overrun the engine and travel at a higher speed than that at which they are propelled by the engine. The water through which the vessels pass may be stocked with plants, fish, &c., or these may be in water separated by glass panels from the main body of water. These glass panels have scenery painted or otherwise represented thereon, or may form the front of artificial caverns. The vessels are attached to their undercarriages H by means which permit of detachment in case of accident. When the vessels are detached, they float to the surface and are only held by pivoted guiding-links H<4>. The air shafts C<2> are also fitted with ladders for use in emergency. The vessels may be provided with two sets of wheels engaging above and below a plain rail instead of the channelled rail described. In a modification, the vessels are made in the form of fishes. The tail portion is hinged and is lifted for the passengers to enter. The upper portion is preferably glazed, the glass plates being shaped or painted to resemble the scales of the fish. The eyes of the fish are represented by glow lamps.
