Coal - cutting machines. - An arrangement of gearing for coal-cutting and like machines of the disk type comprises a casing A, within which a longitudinal driving-shaft G is arranged to drive the transverse shaft H, from which the disk and haulage gear are driven. The transmission train shown comprises a bevel-pinion G' on the shaft G, a bevel-wheel L and a pinion M mounted on a fixed spindle R, a wheel N and pinion P on a fixed spindle S, and a wheel K on the shaft H. To compensate for inaccuracies in the bores of the wheels, one or more of the spindles may be displaceable, for example by making the ends of the spindle S eccentric to the body. The spindles S, R may be locked against rotation by a plate W formed with apertures to embrace the ends of the spindles, the head of the spindle S being polygonal. The casing A is provided with a removable cover and may have internal strengthening-webs T, T'.
