Abstract

5604. Dixon, A. C. March 8. Toothed gearing.-To drive a shaft from the piston of a steam or other engine, or for converting reciprocating into continuous rotary motion, or vice versa, generally, a pair of wheels b, g, having teeth a r o u n d approximately half of their peripheries, m e s h alternately with a reciprocating rack a, and are mounted on shafts c, f intergeared to rotate always in opposite directions. To bring the elements smoothly into gear at each change of stroke, the rack is formed with a pivoted tooth h near each end normally held by a spring m against an abutment l, and also with retractable teeth h<1> formed on arms i which are pivoted at k to the rack frame and are normally held by springs o against abutments n. The retractable teeth h' are provided with arms h<2> adapted to co-operate with inclined lugs b<1>, g<11> on the wheels b, g adjacent to the correlative end cogs z, so that at each change of stroke one of the inclined lugs, as g<11> on the wheel g, raises the retractable tooth, while the opposite end tooth as z<1> on the other wheel b, slips past the spring- pivoted tooth h.
