3705. Marks, E. C. R., [Auckland Sewing Muchine Co.]. Feb. 15. Sewing-machines; lock-stitching by hooks; governing needle thread.-A rotary hook is constructed to hold an ordinary commercial reel of cotton, and a long-stroke loop-spreader is provided to assist in the passage of the thread loop; over the reel-case. By means of a bifurcated take-up arm having two thread-eyes, double the usual supply of slack thread is provided. The reel-case 20 is supported by a rib 12 on it, which runs in a race in the rotary hook 46. The detachable part 15 forms the upper wall of the race. The reel-case is held from rotation by a part 10 which projects from the base of the reel-case upwards and enters a recess in the underside of the work-plate. The cap of the reel-case is held in position by a spring catch 22, Fig. 15. The rotary hook has a forward hollow hook 48 and a rear hook 49. It is rotated twice for each descent of the needle. The needle-thread loop is spread by a hook 53 on a bar 52, slidingly mounted in a pivoted frame 50. The bar 52 is reciprocated by a lever 54 having a cam-shaped opening in its rear portion which engages with a pin 61 on a rotating disk 62. The opening is shaped to give to the bar 52 a prolonged dwell at the lower end of its stroke and a rapid upward movement. The frame 50 is rocked by a sliding piece 73, which is operated by the cam-edge of the disk 62.
