Abstract

2015. Beaumont, E. G. E. Jan. 27. Cylinders. - The volume of the combustion chamber is varied automatically according to the load on the engine by means of a loose piston B, which is loaded by a spring so constructed that it exerts a pull, during normal working, equal to the average pressure on the piston throughout a normal four-stroke cycle, and, when the charge is decreased to develop, for instance, half power, it exerts a pull equal to the average pressure throughout the cycle at half power. Hydraulic dash pots are employed to keep the piston B approximately stationary throughout each cycle, but to admit of its automatic adjustment as the load varies. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the spring d<1> acts through a lever D on the piston B, their movements being controlled by the passage of liquid through adjustable orifices a<3>, b<2>. In an alternative arrangement, the spring acts upon the piston B through a column of liquid in a pipe with an adjustable restriction. With the latter arrangement, several pistons may be loaded by the same springs, and the column of liquid may have a non-return valve with a small by-pass. In larger engines a single cylinder may be provided with several pistons B.
