Abstract
1420. Rosenberg, A. Jan. 20. Hearing-appliances.-Apparatus for assisting the deaf to hear comprises a microphone B, a battery A, a vibrator C, and means such as a plug d for transmitting the vibrations to the ear or the bones of the head. The vibrator comprises an electro - magnet, and an armature g mounted on a spring or diaphragm h, attached to the casing D and adjustable with regard to the electro-magnet. The armature may constitute part of the core of a solenoid, being movable while the remainder is fixed. The plug d may form part of the casing D or may be attached, as shown at d<1>, to the spring or diaphragm h. The microphone and battery may be carried in the pocket, and the vibrator casing D may be so small as to be concealed in the external auditory canal, or, as in a church or theatre, the microphone may be in circuit with a number of vibrators for the use of different people. The microphone vibrations may be augmented by means of a relay circuit, and in the case of extreme deafness the microphone may be mounted in contact with the head of the user so as to be agitated by the mechanical vibrations of the bones when speaking, so that the deaf person may more easily hear his own voice.
