Abstract

28,283. Delpeuch, E. Dec. 28, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Springs.-In a spring suspension of the kind in which compressed air cushioning - devices are connected with compressed-air reservoirs and provided with means for retarding the return flow of air to the cushioning- devices from the reser voirs, for vehicles of all kinds and aeroplanes, the cushioning - cylinders are in communication with the reservoirs through the intermediary of valves which allow a free flow of air from the cylinders to the reservoir but are formed with small orifices so as to allow only a restricted return flow, and coiled springs are disposed below the pistons for resisting sideways tilting of the body. All the cylinders a may be in communication by pipes e with one common reservoir, but preferably two reservoirs are provided, one for each axle. Valves g in the pipes e are provided with small apertures o for the return flow. The air pressure in the reservoirs may be increased in accordance with the load by means of a pump, and may be reduced by means of a valve operated by the driver. Loss of air may be made up by means of a pump disposed between the frame and axle so as to be operated by the vibrations. The coiled spring h below the piston is arranged so as to be normally unstressed and to come into action at one side of the vehicle if the vehicle tilts sideways. Safety springs may be fitted above the pistons for use in case of failure of the pneumatic springs. The cylinders may be arranged vertically, horizontally, or obliquely, and may be used with the ordinary springs.
