Abstract
27,960. Siemens Bros. Dynamo Works, Hird, F., and Grimston, G. S. Dec. 23. Search-lights.-Two search-lights mounted side by side are geared so that they can be trained and tipped either independently or in invariable relation to each other. The mechanism is situated between the lower parts of the barrels, and a large part of it can be detached with the barrels. A turntable B, which may be rotated by hand or by a worm B<1> to effect simultaneous horizontal training, carries a post C through which passes a shaft D. A vertical sector a for each search-light is hung on the shaft D and is toothed at a<1> to engage a worm c operated by a hand-wheel d<2>. To allow of simultaneous vertical training, the worm shafts have spur-wheels, one of which engages a broad pinion on an intermediate shaft. This pinion can be slid on the shaft, so as to engage both spur-wheels, by a short lever, the end of which passes between two flanges on a sleeve attached to the pinion. Alternatively, the sectors may be clamped together by means of arms j, j<1>, one of which carries a screw and a wing-nut or clamping-lever, while the other is made with a curved slot. Two perforated arms h, h<1> are cast on each vertical sector to receive pivots i, i<1> secured to a bracket on the corresponding barrel A, which can thus be readily detached without leaving any awkwardly-projecting parts. Spring cotters may be used to retain the pivots in their bearings. On the barrel are bearings c<3> for a spindle c<2> carrying a hand-wheel c<4> and a worm engaging a toothed sector b. This is attached to a tubular pivot i<4> which passes between the pivot i<1> and the arm h<1>. The sector b may be detached with the barrel. To prevent rotation of the horizontal sector b during horizontal training by the wheel c<4>, the horizontal sector is also connected to the vertical one by an arm on the former carrying a pin which enters a socket on the vertical sector. The worms may be arranged as described in Specification No. 20,201, A.D. 1907, so that they may readily be disengaged.
