23,771. Green, E. A. Nov. 6. Man-holes.-A hopper a forms the bottom of a man-hole for drains, sewers, &c. Inlet channels d1, d2, &c. connect the drains with the hopper, which has an outlet f passing horizontally or vertically from its lowest point. The crosssection of the channels gradually passes from circular to nearly rectangular at. the inner end, which rests on, and conforms to, a rabbet on the outside or inside of the edge of the hopper; or the edge may have scalloped recesses for the reception of hooded channels. Open channels may be made with a depending lip to clear the joint or notched to cover the shoulder.
