' snr'rro TANK.
Application fi1ed June 25,1928. Serial No. 288,211.
' This invention relates to septic tanks which are used for the disposal of sewage in communities which do not have a modern sewage disposal system, the primary object being to construct a tank from precast units of such form that a tank of any desired capacity may be easily produced. Another object of the invention is to produce units of novel form which may be quickly assembled into a tank and united in such a manner vthat the joint will be effectually, sealed and will not open and leak as the tank settles. Other objects will appear in the course-of thefollowing description and the invention resides in.
certain novel features which will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Inthe accompanying drawings;
Figure l'is a plan view'of a tank of three units constructed in accordance with the invention, the top being omitted and parts being in section; 1
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same; 7 7. 7 Figures 3, 4 and 5 are perspective views of the different tank units shown and 2.
The drawings show three typical units 1, 2' and 3, the units 1 and 2 being end units and the unit, 3 being an intermediate unit. The units are formed of concrete or cementitious material in suitable molds and each unit is preferably of a generally cylindrical formation. Referring particularly to the unit 1, it will be'noted that in the wall thereof, near its top, there is an'inlet opening 4 in which the end of a drain pipe from a building may be received and secured, and on the inside of the wall over andaround said opening is a baflle tube 5 by which the inflowing sewage is retarded so as to avoid disturbing the bacteria which flows on the surface of the stream. At a point preferably diametrically opposite the baffle 5, an opening 6 extends" through the wall of the unit and an offset or flange 7 is formed on the exterior of the: unit around said opening, said flange extending the full;
has an opening 12 with an external flange or in Figs. 1 Y
plasteror the like being poured through the openings 9 to completely fill-the mating grooves 8 and 14 and form a 'keybindin'g the units together and sealing thejoint; In 5 i order that the builder may beadvised that a 3 7 perfect waterproof seal is formed and that there are no air pockets to hold back the sealingmix, a hole 15 is formed in the floor 7 or bottom .of the opening 12which hole com-, 1 inunicates with the groove 14. When "the compound is poured through the opening 9, the workman can seeit coming out at the hole 15 and he Wlll then know that there is the grooves. I The unit 2 is provided with vertically disa perfect seal of the unitswhich willbe strong and waterproof when the mix setsin posed grooves 16 whichreceive a baffle plate 17 terminating short of the floor orbottom? 1 of the unit and serving to retain the sewage in the sludge chamber prov'ided by the units and permit only the purified water to pass to and escape through the outlet 10.
In many cases, the two end unitswill pro vide a tank of suflicient capacity, but if e1. larger tank is desired, the intermediate unit' 3 is employed and as many intermediate units may be used as maybenecessaryto meet the 1 requirements. The intermediate unit is with-- out baflle'tubes, such as 5 and 11, and is formed with openings 18,19 corresponding, '7
respectively, with the opening 12 of the unit 2 and theopening 6 of the unit 1.. Around the opening 18 is an external flange 20 corresponding in all respects to the flange 13 ofthe unit 2 and around the opening 19 is an 9 external flange 21 corresponding in all res f spects to theflange 7 of the'unitl. Whenf the intermediateu nit is to be used, the flange I 20 thereof is fitted in the opening 6 of the unit 1 and the flange 13 of the unit "is fitted .in the opening 19 of the intermediate unit,
the flanges, being keyed and sealed in the manner previously described. If more than one intermediate unit is to be used,the flange 20 of one unit is fitted in the opening'19 of another unit so that there is formed a long sluge chainber in Which thebacteria is held I to act upon the sewerage so that to purify By my invention a tank of any desired size may be easily and quickly built and the several units will be so eflectually'united that,
except under some .very abnormal conditions, sinklng of the of the 1o1nts.
Having fully described my invention What I claim'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :-V
1. A precast open-top-- unit for septic tanks having an opening through its wall and 6X- tending substantially the full height of the same and provided exteriorly With a flange around said opening, the-sidesand bottomof the flange having a continuous groove in their outer. sides, the ends of Which open through the top of the flange and the top of the flange having a continuous uninterrupted surface to fit closely Within a mating unit to aid in supporting'the same and, prevent relative turn-:
ing thereof.
ground Will not cause openingv 2. A septic tankconsistingof precast opentop units arranged side by side and each having an opening through its wall'and an ex ternal flange around the opening, the flange .on one'unit mating With and fitting within the flange on'the adjacent unit,-the flanges having, registering grooves in their opposed lateral surfaces to receive a sealingand bond .ing composition and. the outer flange having openings through its top portion alinedwith the ends of the. grooves, and acover extending overall the units and resting on the upper edges thereof and on the topportions of the outer flanges. t
3. A septic tank consisting of precastunits 1 arranged side hy-side and each having an opening through its Wall and anv external flange around the opening, the flange on one unit niatin g with and fitting Within the flange on the adjacent unit, the flanges having registering grooves in their-lopposed surfaces to receive a sealing and bonding composition,
the inner flange having a sight hole formed in its floor communicating with said grooves.
In-testiniony whereof, I have signed this specification. 5 v
