23,322. Mather, W. A., and Mather, E. Nov. 2. Loom shuttlechanging mechanism; take-up motions. - A shaft 12, Figs. 4 and 5, is rotated by weftfork or weft-feeler mechanism as described below, and a lever 31 on the shaft raises a lever 32, so that the pin 35 engages behind a bracket 30 on one of two levers 20, which carry the shuttle - box front plate 22. The levers 20 are pivoted on the respective forks of an open hanger 19 on the lay_ bottom. A spring 24, attached to a bracket 25 on the hanger 19 and to a projection 26 on one of the levers 20, normally keeps the movable front 22 in alinement with the fixed parts 27 of the shuttle-box front. A corrugated spring blade 29 engagingwith the bracket 30 assists this action. On the backward spring of the lay, the levers 20 are rocked against the action of the spring by the levers 32, until the spring passes beyond the pivots of these levers, when it assists the motion. The levers 20 and the front 22 are thus rocked into the position shown in Fig. 5, and during this motion a curved plate 23, connecting the levers 20 and preferably made in one with the front 22, strikes the hooks 42, Fig. 4, of the three-armed levers 38 in the shuttle magazine 36 and rocks them against the action of springs 40, so that their lower arms are withdrawn to free a shuttle, while their upper arms pass under and support the remaining shuttles. The curved plate 23 comes to rest against a leather buffer on the breast beam, and when the lay beats up it moves upwards along its rest and partly turns the box front 22 towards the lay. A lateral projection on one of the arms 20 comes in contact with the head of an adjustable screw 44 provided with a locknut, and, on the further motion of the lay, the levers 20 are rocked thereby, the spring 24 completing the motion, and the front 22 returns to the lay carrying with it a shuttle from the magazine. During the previous backward motion of the lay, a shaft 47 provided with an arm 49 connected by links 50, 51 to one of the levers 20 is turned, and a tongue 45, Fig. 5, fixed on the shaft 47 is projected into the shuttle box, against the action of a spring 46, so as to divert the empty shuttle from the lay through a shoot 52 into a receptacle at the side of the loom. The links 50, 51 have sufficient play to allow the swing levers 20 to move so that the spring 24 passes beyond their pivoted points before the arm 49 is actuated. When the apparatus is applied to underpick looms, the links 50, 51 are cranked or replaced by an equivalent connexion to pass round the race of the picking-stick. iTo rock the shaft 12, one of the weft-fork rods 2, Fig. 3, which is moved against the action of a spring, raises a pawl 9 by means of a cord 7 or a wire-pull and bell-crank, and a projection 13 on the pawl 9 engages a finger 11 on the shaft 12 ; or a weft-feeler mechanism may be used, the shuttle having a cop feeler with a lateral projection as described in Specification No. 22,497, A.D. 1907. When the weft is exhausted and on the beat-up, this feeler engages a finger on a bellcrank 14 and removes its hook or latch from the horizontal arm of a lever 16, 16, provided with a screw 17. A spring 17 then pulls forwards the lever 16, and its screw 17 operates the arm 11 and shaft 12. By means of links 18 connected to the lay bottom, the lever 16, 16 is rocked and its horizontal arm pulled back when the lay moves back to allow the latch on the bell-crank to pass behind it and lock it in position. The pawl 9 liberates the ratchet-wheel 10 of the take-up mechanism for two picks when the weft fork is operated.
