22,001. Phillips, T. Oct. 17. Miners' safety lamps.-The glass A is provided at one side with a metal frame B, the edges of which are cut radially and provided with asbestos packing D. A wire gauze H is fixed in slots in the frame to which is hinged a metal door C provided with a suitable catch or lock. The glass A and the door B are held in the lamp by suitable flanges or rings. When the door C is closed, the lamp is used as an ordinary safety lamp, but by opening the door the lamp may be used for detecting the presence of gas in the atmosphere.
