Gas retorts.-The lids of retorts are provided with toggle levers so arranged that a single movement of an operating-lever in one direction unseals and opens the lids, while a single movement in the opposite direction closes and seals them. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the lid c is carried by a cross-bar d, which is hinged at one end e and connected at the other end f to a toggle arm g. The other toggle arm h is mounted on a shaft i operated by a suitable lever. A stop m limits the opening movement of the lid. The toggles g, h may be fitted in duplicate. Instead of the shaft i, an horizontal handle r, Fig. 8, or a vertical handle s may be mounted on the arm h, which then works on a stud t and has a lug v to limit its movement beyond the position of maximum pressure. In Fig. 14, the lever h is shown mounted loosely on the shaft i, to which is keyed an arm h<1> ; a link g<1> connects the arm h<1> with the arm g. The levers are shown in the closed and open position in full and dotted lines respectively. Fig. 15 shows another arrangement in which a roller x of a lever y mounted on the shaft i engages the cross-bar d or an extension on the bar. The bottom lids may be formed with a raised surface on the inner side to protect the sealing-face from the falling coke.
