Abstract

20,617. Sadler, W. Sept. 30. Window opening and closing apparatus.-The windows of a railway carriage are closed collectively from the end of the carriage by a system of rods and levers, which may also be arranged to automatically fasten the doors when the train is in motion. The handle K, Fig. 1, is connected by rods and levers to the bell-crank lever D, one arm of which operates a horizontal bar E running the length of the carriage. This bar is provided with inclines F engaging the bevelled ends of vertical rods G, the other bevelled ends of which engage the bevelled ends of bars H in the door. The rods H have inclines which engage with inclines N of pawls 0, which hold the window in its lowered position in opposition to springs carried by pinions P, which by their engagement with the fixed rack R tend to raise it. When the bars H are moved to the right, the pawls 0 are depressed in opposition to springs W and the windows are free to rise. Any bar H may also be operated by a band-lever S.
