Paving-blocks.-Roads and tramways are paved with reversible hollow blocks a formed of cast metal &c. with tapered undercut or dovetailed chilled metal studs b, the spaces between which are filled with a non-slipping material c, such as lead or a bituminous composition, with or without metal strips embedded therein. The blocks may be formed with projections and recesses so as to interlock and are laid either continuously or alternately with blocks of hard natural or artificial stone. The interiors of the blocks may be filled, before or after the blocks are in position, with concrete, pitch, bitumen, prepared asphalt, or other suitable material in which reinforcing bars may be embedded. The top and bottom internal surfaces of the blocks may be formed convex or with strengthening-ribs, and projections and recesses may be formed in the blocks so that adjacent blocks will interlock. Modified forms of blocks are shown in Figs. 12, 13, and 15. In Fig. 12, the top and bottom surfaces are formed as open grids; in Fig. 13, the top and bottom of the block are made separately and are secured together on the metal body a by means of a tie g ; and in Fig. 15 the top and bottom surfaces are of bard wood in which the metal studs are screwed or otherwise fixed.
